Stacy A. Nyikos
Stacy
A. Nyikos has spent most of her life following her two greatest
passions, traveling and writing. Stacy was born in Houston, Texas. At
the age of two, her travels began when her family moved to
Indianapolis, Indiana. There, her own experiences with cold winter
months and watching lots of television became the inspiration for her
first children’s picture book, Squirt. Moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, when she was twelve became the stuff of her second book, Shelby. “My new school was a scary place for me in the beginning. I had to learn to make new friends."
Stacy
traveled back to Indiana to complete her BA at the University of Notre
Dame where she first experimented with writing poetry. Upon finishing,
she moved to Kiel, Germany, where she completed her MA and wrote her
first novel. She returned to the U.S. for her doctorate in Political
Science at the University of Virginia. The switch to fiction came with
her last move.
“When
we moved back to Tulsa after I finished at UVA, my life changed
dramatically...again. For the first time, I wasn’t a student
anymore. I was an adult and a new parent. My first daughter had just
turned one. With my new free time, I finally had the chance to really
watch her. Seeing how she experienced the world was so fascinating. It
reminded me of my childhood experiences. Then one day, I woke up with
stories in my head that didn’t have anything to do with what I had
studied.”
Nevertheless,
it was the years of academic training that prepared her for a
career in children’s writing. “Academic writing taught me to be
curious, how to research, and, most importantly, how to weave a tale.”
Stacy
still teaches at the University of Oklahoma. When she is not working
with students, she is writing. She has since written three picture
books, a middle grade novel, and is currently completing her first
young adult novel, Euromutt.
